Hi everybody!

I've made a few small tweaks to the chat interface:

  • Online users visible on mobile (except in popout player)
  • Ability to collapse online users box (hit the little arrow)
  • Added an online users counter
  • Added buttons to quickly reply or PM a user (appears in the top right of a message when you hover your mouse over or tap a message on mobile)

I've recently pushed live a whole ton of updates.

I'm going to be frank here, there are so many little things changed (in the backend especially) that I'm not sure if I overlooked any important issues so there could be a whole pile of bugs waiting to crawl out (but that's part of the fun isn't it?).

A lot of the updates are months and months old but were never pushed live and I'm really bad at keeping a changelog, so I'm going to try and remember what's new.

General Changes
  • CSS changes/optimization
  • JS changes/optimization
  • Backend changes/optimization

Blog
  • Unlisted posts: these posts will be hidden from the feed but can still be accessed with a direct link (for example the April Fool's post).
  • Post interface: The interface to actually make posts was given a bit of a facelift.

Users
  • Style changes: User profiles have had their appearance adjusted slightly.
  • Remember me sessions: Users can now view and cancel any active remember me sessions in their panel.
  • Comments: Users can now comment on user profiles.

Notifications
  • Email: Users can now be notified of a notification by email, to do so they can enable the setting in their panel.
  • Automatically mark as read: Users can now have notifications automatically mark themselves as read when they click on them, this can be turned off in the User's panel.

CommentsYou can now link to comments (currently no button or anything, but here is an example).

Playlist PageThe legend for all the systems should now stick to the top of the page as you scroll.

Let me know if you find anything I missed so I can add it to the list! Also let me know if you find anything broken or acting strange!

P.S. If the layout looks stange, refresh the page.

As the site is still in development, there are bound to be bugs. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions, feel free to email them to us at dev@radionintendo.com.

    Hello!
I've pushed some changes to the chat live today.

These changes include:

CommandsThere are now commands you can use in the chat to perform various functions, such as:

  • /help - Shows you a list of commands available to you.
  • /clear - Clears all the messages from your chat window.
  • /pause - Pauses checking for new messages.
  • /mute - Allows you to hide messages coming from certain users
  • /pm - Send a message to another chat member without other users seeing it.

If you have ideas for other commands, please don't hesitate to share them!

OpengraphThere is now some opengraph support, this mean that when a link is posted in the chat you may see a little more information related to it.

Private MessagesUsing the /pm command you can now send private messages to other users in the chat. Only you, the recipient and admins can see these messages. To tell if a message is a private message or not look for a small red arrow and your name in the message.

As the site is still in development, there are bound to be bugs. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions, feel free to email them to us at dev@radionintendo.com.

Bacon, in the next update of Radio Nintendo, could you add a soundtrack suggestion box? Maybe one where people can add YT links for samples and such.

Been thinking of something like this for awhile, will think about how to implement such a thing. The only real issue I have with something like that is if the correct people will check on the suggestions, Mainly Illus and Jack since they deal with the music stuff; I just do the technical stuff.

That would be a good plan. It could be a page called "suggestion box" or something. With a link to a YouTube playlist with the music. Maybe link it to the page where the overview of all the games are that are currently into the database? Thinking out loud here.

Unrelated sidenote, speaking about updates... I think it's a good idea to rename the page named "playlist" to "index" or something. Since more than once, I thought it was the current playlist of the songs that were playing.

I think the playlist name is a ok name, more accurate and straightforward (In my opinion) than something like "index", although I can understand the confusion. There is probably some better verbage that could be used but off the top of my head I can't think of much. Maybe something like "Tracks", "Tracklist" or "songs", but to me none of those feel right.

How's everyone doing? Shugnussy here to bring you up to speed on some current events with the stream.

After recently looking over our current streaming setup, and our desire for expansion with more content, we realized we need to change the software we are using to broadcast music on the station. Because of this, we will be messing with the stream a lot this week, and I would just like to apologize in advance in the event the stream goes down. I had to pull the stream down just now for a decent amount of time, and I honestly got a twisty feeling inside while it was down, since I know you guys like to listen. I will try my best to maximize up time this week, but I'm just letting you know now. With this software upgrade, our stream box will soon also be hosting our sister site, Radio Whirlwind. Other than that, I want to keep this update short and sweet until we're done with all the upgrades and I can boast about all the cool new features we get to show off to you guys. If you have any questions or concerns, drop them in the comments below!

I turned back on Shinesparkers, but during the upgrade process, I'm leaving all the other alternative streams offline.
Hello everyone, a site update has arrived!

The main changes you guys will notice are:

Multiple Remember Me SessionsYou can now "Remember Me" on multiple devices or browsers at once without them canceling each other out! Due to the nature of this update however, all previous remember me sessions have been invalidated and you will have to login again.

NotificationsCurrently you will only recieve notifications for comments, although more support can be added in the future. If you have any suggestions for other parts of the site to add notifications to, leave a comment below!

Other changesOther than the two things above, there are a multitude of bug fixes, tweaks and other optimizations including (but not limited to):

  • Added playist page link in header and footer.
  • CSS changes and optimizations.
  • JS changes and optimizations.
  • Some template cleanup.
  • Completely rewrote the database module of Baconcore.
  • Completely rewrote plugin system.
  • Moved certain modules (such as blog) to plugins to allow for greater maintainability and compatibility.

The list above is in no way exhaustive as the difference in versions this update was huge (the Baconcore version before this update was 0.191.5 it is now 0.448.2).

As the site is still in development, there are bound to be bugs. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions, feel free to email them to us at dev@radionintendo.com.

Hey friends, it's Shugnussy!

Today I'd like to discuss Radio Nintendo's alternate streams. As you all may know, back in Feburary we partnered with Shinesparkers to celebrate Metroid's 30th Anniversary with the internet's first Metroid Radio station. The project has been a success so far with new content coming soon. Shortly after the launch of Shinesparkers stream, we started testing a radio stream solely dedicated to music from the Super Nintendo. We didn't formally announce this feature, we just added it to our stream directory in the onsite player. In fact, I don't think we formally announced our stream directory on our onsite player either, whoops! To access it, just hit that setting button next to the listener count, and you'll see all the available streams Radio Nintendo is broadcasting on our server.

We had a few listeners enjoy the SNES stream, however, starting today, I've switched the SNES stream to a Nintendo 64 stream, just to test some additional features. This is not permanent change, as we're looking to add additional stations to the site in the future. We'd like to know, what 24/7 radio station would you like to listen to? Should we have stations by console, game series, or game genre? What would you listen to? Feel free to drop a comment on this post, or talk about it with us in our chatroom. Please also let us know of any other issues you may have with the stream. I'm planning to launch 2 streams by the end of the month, with a possibility of more on the way.

Before I end off this post, I'd like to say that yes, live content is returning to Radio Nintendo. We have a set of new hosts ready to bring you content. Before we do however, we are still working on our onsite shows systems, and how we will distribute podcasts to listeners who miss the live broadcast. If you would like to create live audio content on Radio Nintendo, please send me an email at nintendojack@gmail.com! There is much work to be done here at Radio Nintendo, so please hang tight, and as always, keep listening to video game music!

Can you programming certain series to play for 1-2-hours? for example "Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior hour" or sonic hour, or *castlevania*, donkey kong country, animal crossing, and so.
    also I liked the idea of an 8bit hour(NES,GB,GBC), 16bit(SNES,GBA), others DS,N64 and NGC,Wii,WiiU,3DS.

Is it possible to get the substations added to TuneIn Radio? Or can someone help me get it working with Custom URL?

I'm trying to listen to Shinesparkers via TuneIn on my Windows Phone (since it rebuffers better than IE), but neither the http://play.radionintendo.com:8000/shinesparkers nor the .m3u link seem to work with the TuneIn app -- it says the URL is "unsupported"...

Hello there! My name is Darren and I'm bringing a brand new station and show to Radio Nintendo called Shinesparkers Radio! This is the first dedicated Metroid radio station created to mark the 30th anniversary of the Metroid franchise. You will be able to hear music from thirty years of Metroid, including remixes and arrangements from albums such as Harmony of a Hunter and Metroid Metal. Over time, we plan to build on our music library and add even more music for your enjoyment. We also plan to host a series of live shows, so I hope you'll tune in for those too!

Check out more information here and follow us on Twitter for the latest updates!

    Hey Jonez
We're currently testing a third station with Radio Nintendo. After our recent feedback survey we saw that the SNES was the favourite console of a lot of our listeners, so for the next week we'll be testing the RN: SNES stream. If people listen to it and our server handles the load well (which is looking good so far!) we can add more themed stations! The main Radio Nintendo station still plays music from all consoles and that will never change.
We'll also look into those bugs!
    Thanks

I have seen RN has 3 stations now: here is a little bit of feedback for the next update:

    - Can the main page has a feature where you can select which station to play? Since at the right corner only the default radio can be selected.
    - The chat in the pop-out player has a bug, where the last said thing hides beneath the input field.

Just a question: RN & RN: SNES -> Does this mean that the main channel will no longer play SNES ?

I added the ability to change the station (click on the slider, if only the default station is showing, refresh your page) and fixed the alignment issue with the player chat.

We've also made a change to the algorithm. This change was made in order to fix the non-concurrence of music playing due to multiple duplicated folders within our server. Thanks for stopping by and please, be sure to enjoy the brand new additions added to Radio Nintendo.

We're always doing our best to improve the station. We hope you are looking forward to our next stream update.
Hey there,

Over the last few months, we've been talking a lot about future plans for Radio Nintendo. We've been providing you with updates and additional features that have been adding over the last couple of months along with updates that will be coming to you in the future. There are a lot of things that we're not very sure about however. This is why we've put up a survey that gives you, the listener, the opportunity to give us your feedback in order to help improve Radio Nintendo. In survey is very simple and it will give enough information to help get us started working on changes to our server, site, and social media feeds. We hope you take the time to fill the survey out and we'll be sure to keep you updated on the feedback you've provided us.

You can click right here to go the survey over on Google Forms.

Thanks so much for your support and I hope you're excited to see our plans in 2016!

Greetings!
I have come to deliver some updates for the holidays!

This update features a bit of a change to the RN design allowing the site to scale more fluidly to varying display sizes, this will be especially apparent if you are on a smaller device such as a phone or tablet.

Aside from the responsive design I have moved RN to a newer version of baconcore which as usual, is full of bug fixes, optimizations etc, some of them include:

  • Search has been overhauled quite a bit.
  • Parts of the framework have been made easier to work with, allowing for quicker development of new features.
  • Some templates have been improved.
  • Started removal of hardcoded text in some templates.

As the site is still in development, there are bound to be bugs. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions, feel free to email them to us at dev@radionintendo.com.

Hey everyone, it's Shugnussy again!

Today I would like to say that Des is no longer part of the management team here at Radio Nintendo. He'll still be around however, if you want to say hi, talk about anime, or lend him any gun ammo. Radio Nintendo will continue to be managed by Bacon and Shugnussy for an indefinite amount of time in the foreseeable future.

So what's next? Well we got a few emails from content creators expressing interest for more live shows, and I'm happy to say Radio Nintendo will be relaunching live content this month. After that, we have a few more surprises to talk about. I'll keep everyone posted on Radio Nintendo news right here, so keep watching!

Is it more preferable to give live broadcasts a go next month in the new year? Makes it more fitting don't you think? Unless there's some kind of Christmas going-on to kickstart it all.
Hey there!

It has been quite a while since I've put any new updates up hasn't it? Well do not fret, for I have come bearing updates!

Here is the list:

  • Double click to expand track title was changed to single click.
  • Chat plugin has had several optimizations on both the frontend and backend
  • Updated Baconcore version (site was using 0.8.3, is now using 0.138.2)
  • Baconcore recieved optimizations.
  • Baconcore had modules reworked.
  • Plugins split off from primary codebase to allow for easier upgrading.
  • Template module of Baconcore completely redone.
  • Admin control panel had a plethora of features tweaked and added to allow admins to more easily operate the site.
  • Users can now update their email if they change emails (or no longer have access).
  • Post feed on home now mirrors blog page.
  • Shows page has been replaced with a "Under Construction" page as we prepare for future content there
  • Numerous bug fixes.
  • Some JavaScript was rewritten and/or tweaked.
  • Search bar on blog now has advanced options.
  • Fixed a bug with page title not being reset if music is paused.
  • Fixed a bug where popout player doesn't load chat.
  • Fixed a bug with inline player looking broken on mobile.
  • Fixed a bug with users not being able to comment.
  • Fixed a bug with comment deletion.
  • Fixed a bug with chat muting.
  • Added ability for admins to delete messages from chat.
  • A ton more things I have forgot to mention here.

I plan to release a few minor changes and fixes during this week and I will update this post to reflect them.

As the site is still in development, there are bound to be bugs. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions, feel free to email them to us at dev@radionintendo.com.

Hey friends, it's your pal Shugnussy here to spill the beans and tell you exactly what's up at Radio Nintendo.

It's been a fun year for Radio Nintendo in 2015, we got the new site all launched up, a brand new stream that can handle many, many listeners, and much higher quality music. We have our new chat system which does not require Java or any kind of ad-filled web application. All you need to join the chat room is a Radio Nintendo account, which you can create here! Along side all that, waaaay back in April, our team was at the Vancouver Retro Gaming Expo playing tons of video game music in New Westminster, BC which was, as always, a fun experience!

Now I know a lot of you have many questions on what to expect from Radio Nintendo in the future. Will you produce more live shows? What happened to your old content? What other projects are you working on? Luckily for you folks, I'm here to answer many of those for you today.

Will you produce more live shows?

The simple answer, yes, we are interested in bringing back live programming in DJ sets, talk shows, and various other live formats. If you currently run a podcast, or wish to begin live audio broadcasting, feel free to shoot me an email at nintendojack@gmail.com. With that said, when we see a demand from producers who wish to broadcast, then we will resume live programming on Radio Nintendo.

What happened to your old content?

Ah, yes, the good 'ol days of Radio Nintendo. The Minus World, Live Nintendo, Silver's Saturday Show, Talk to the Animal, Game Freaks Live and many others... That content is currently not available on the Radio Nintendo website sadly, however, a lot of those people are still producing content online! If you're looking for the Minus World gang, you can find them over here. Live Nintendo switched over to Blitcast before departing from Radio Nintendo, that content can be found here. SilverSonic isn't doing radio these days, but he's doing frequent live streams on his twitch, and I'd also like to note he made it to Summer Games Done Quick a few months a go to speedrun Shadow the Hedgehog for charity! James is currently doing one-off broadcasts over on Chipbit, his chiptune exclusive radio. Finally you can catch whatever IllusDark8 is doing over at his Radio Whirlwind (which he still needs me to help run).

And yes, those good 'ol Radio Nintendo shows that used to be on air are saved, and you may see those podcasts return to Radio Nintendo in the future! But for now, go enjoy the other content they produce!

What other projects are you working on?

We're going to be testing several ideas. From multiple radio streams playing different content, to lower bandwidth streams that don't use a lot of data so you can listen on a cellular network where you may be limited on your data allotment. We're also in contact with several key people in the video game music industry looking to bring you exclusive content. For more on the back end, we will be rolling out a newer version of our content management system, Baconcore, which will allow site admins and future show hosts to better manage their content on the site. Other than that, there aren't many other things we have planned, at least not developed enough to reveal them, only to have them maybe not see the light of day.

Anyway, thanks again for sticking around with Radio Nintendo, you don't know how happy it makes me seeing everyone here. Also, I'll be sure to set up a special Christmas eve broadcast this year, it's killing me that we missed the holiday shows last year. And if you have anymore questions, just leave them below in the comments!

Hello friends,

When I got the news about Satoru Iwata's death, I was honestly in shock. At first, I thought it was a friend joking around with me, until I finally read Nintendo's press release. I had known about his medical history, missing out on the past few E3's, but overall, I never thought it would result in something as shocking as death. I spent most of my evening rewatching some of his E3 presentations and memorable "direct to you" segments. Iwata contributed a lot of the world of Nintendo, from his work at HAL to launching out Nintendo's most successful console.

From everyone here at Radio Nintendo, and the Nintendo community at large, we will miss you Iwata, you hold a place in our hearts.

He deserved to live much longer without his medical ailments. Alas, I hope he finds eternal peace and gets to play all of his company's masterpieces as he pleases, rest in peace Iwata.
Long time no see!

Even though it might not seem like it at first glance, this update is actually a pretty massive one.

Firstly the things you probably won't notice:
  • The backened (baconcore) has had a plethora of updates, optimization and bug fixes.
  • A large majority of the Javascript has been redone to try and allow the frontend to be updated with much more ease and create a sense of uniformity in the code.

And now for the raison d'etre of this post...

Chat!

The chat feature is very much experimental at the moment but hopefully it will be a useful place for members to connect with each other or discuss what is currently playing on Radio Nintendo. More features are planned for it in the future but if you encounter any bugs or have any suggestions feel free to email me at dev@radionintendo.com.

If you want to check out this new chat just click here, click on the link in the page header, or use the chat that is now loaded with the pop-out player (the notification sound mutes by default in the pop-out player).

The pop-out player has also recieved an overhaul and scales based on the window size (works great on mobile in my opinion).

P.S. if you haven't closed Radio Nintendo in awhile you should refresh your page, otherwise you might run into all sorts of weird happenings.

As the site is still in development, there are bound to be bugs. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions, feel free to email them to us at dev@radionintendo.com.

Hey everyone!

Most of the time I have spent working on the website this month has been optimizing and fixing bugs in the backend, but there are some changes that will be more noticeable to all of you, so I thought now would be a good time to list them off.

New features:
  • Song title now in page title when playing the stream.
  • Double clicking the song title will dropdown a bar showing more (usually all) of the title.
  • Added BBcode inserter to user panel (BBcode already worked, this just makes it easier to use).
  • Animated GIFs! So long as your gif is below 250KB you can use it as your avatar!

Bug fixes:
  • Tweaked search a bit.
  • Fixed a bug with comment deletion.
  • Fixed some avatar uploading bugs.
  • Optimized parts of the backend.
  • Fixed a few bugs with CSS and JavaScript.
  • Logging in and out should no longer stop music playing (doesn't refresh the page)

As the site is still in development, there are bound to be bugs. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions, feel free to email them to us at dev@radionintendo.com.

Many thanks for the hard work :'3
So far, the launch of Radio Nintendo has been smooth and successful, and we couldn't have done it without you! Currently, we're working very hard to fix the remaining bugs, and we would appreciate any additional feedback that you could offer.

Do you have any ideas for any extra features on the website, or maybe you have some recommendations for polishing what we've already done? Please feel free to leave a comment below!

You can also contact us on Facebook!

(If you happen to see this) I suggest a DJ, but not like other radio stations. They won't interrupt, but people can suggest specific songs, and the DJ can play the suggested song, by reading the suggestion (If that makes sense). It shouldn't change too much, but can be a way to get more staff, I suppose. I don't know the chances of this happening though, I'm not sure how hard it would be to implement :/

So glad to see/hear Radio Nintendo is back! I was just wondering, do you guys mind if people use this music stream on their Twitch stream? Obviously with a link to this site advising this is where the awesome music is coming from?

Feel free to play Radio Nintendo on your Twitch stream.
Also, if you're giving your viewers a link to our site, that would be awesome!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the new and improved Radio Nintendo! We have rebuilt the site from the ground up, adding all sorts of features along the way. We hope that this new site will help improve everyone's experience with Radio Nintendo.

Here is a brief rundown of some of the new changes and features:

  • We are no longer using XiinEngine, and are now using 'Baconcore', a CMS being developed by Bacon.
  • We have added a new in-page player that will continue to play music, even as you browse around the site.
  • The site design has been completely redone from scratch, and there may be more themes in the future.
  • Shows listed on the ‘Shows’ page display more useful information. (This will be noticeable when shows are added.)
  • The interface for hosts to manage their shows is currently being redesigned, with ease of use in mind.
  • A whole heap of other smaller changes and features, to help make Radio Nintendo feel more seamless than ever before.

As the site is still in development, there are bound to be bugs. If you find any bugs or have any suggestions, feel free to email them to us at dev@radionintendo.com.

Just wondering, how do you guys receive this music? Also, if one has to pay for using the music, why are there no ads?

      Hey, Jerry!

Great question! I manage the stream and ensure that I look far and wide looking through archives and public sites for the music. It's a hard task but I'm able to find it at the best quality possible.

As for ads, we don't put ads on as we are able to pay for the site on our own and we'd like to keep our dedication to being non-profit.

      Thanks for asking.
